9/22/09 Your commentary almost makes it sound as if all prayer will include a request. Paul’s verse only talks about one kind of prayer…a request. It wasn’t meant to be all exclusive or totally definitive. There are prayers of adoration/worship; confession; thanksgiving; as well as supplication/petition (ACTS) and variations on them, or inclusive of all of them at once. Petition can be for ourselves or intercessory. Also, Jesus doesn’t add power to a prayer, but authority and basis for the request…a prayer offered in any other basis has no expectation of being heard. We can only approach heaven’s throne on the basis of Jesus finished work on the cross and we must be sure we come on that basis and no other.

Also, the ‘dinosaurs’ you identify as such have also been identified as possibly the hippopotamus or elephant and the Nile crocodile. In some Biblical contexts leviathan could also be a whale.

Regarding 9/23 Gossip – perhaps receipt of gossip should also be treated as a teaching moment…based on Matthew 18, ask the individual just what the sin involved is, and have they gone to the individual and confronted them with it, and if so, are they asking you to go as a second witness? And if you are not really a witness, is there a second person who would fit that category better? That will not only stop them, but reinforce the Biblical principle on how to righly handle observed sin.
